The Baltic Dry Index is a composite indicator of the cost of shipping dry bulk cargoes, such as coal, iron ore, and grain, via major sea routes, serving as a gauge for global trade with a focus on Handymax, Panamax, and Capesize vessels. In November 2025, the maximum was 2560.00 index points, the minimum — 1945.00 index points, the average level — 2173.00 index points. The index is often mistakenly used to assess the volume of world trade, though it reflects only shipping costs, and despite fluctuations in the 2010s, trade grew steadily.
